Galileo. Images of the universe from the telescope

The first Galileo's astronomical discoveries date back exactly 400 years ago and in 2009, the United Nations to devote to recurrence, Florence pays tribute to the epic human and intellectual one of its most brilliant with a rich and spectacular shows at the Palazzo Strozzi from March 13 to August 30, 2009: Galileo. Images of the universe from the telescope.

The journey through time and space suggests that exposure starts with the visions and mystical poetry of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, continues with the Greek cosmologies characterized by brilliant homocentric spheres of Eudoxus, through the global architecture of Ptolemy and 'Arab astronomy, recalls rework Christian lands to the heliocentric theory of Copernicus that inspired Galileo and Kepler, the scholars who offered a contribution the affirmation of all, with Newton, the new conception of the universe.

Enriched by fascinating multimedia and popular movies, this path is illustrated by archaeological finds, scientific instruments of exceptional beauty and ingenuity, celestial atlases, drawings, paintings (unpublished spectacular frescoes of Pompeii, as well as Botticelli, Rubens, Guercino ), sculptures, illuminated manuscripts and precious extraordinary operating cosmological models made for the occasion. Among the items the most spectacular astronomical monumental tapestry of Toledo, the Farnese Atlas, a mysterious painting Linder Gallery Interior exhibited for the first time and Galileo's telescope.

The exhibition also delves into the universe of fears and hopes of mankind, describing the relationship between astronomy and astrology, the reports suggests that the imagination has always been between the configurations of the stars, on the one hand, and power, music, medicine, the formation of character and inclinations, to the extraordinary fascination that cosmology has practiced architecture and art, on the other.
